OREGON APPLE & PEAR LABELS
Oregon is a state with a long, rich history, especially in agriculture. Among the principle regions where labels originated for fresh fruit shipments, were the Rogue River Valley around Medford, and the Hood River region in North-central Oregon, on the Columbia River. The big planting boom in the Rogue River Valley took place about 1907 to 1914. The first plantings in Hood River Valley took place about 1877, with the first commercial orchards going in about the 1890s. In Hood River, a real planting boom took place between 1902 and 1909. By 1920, there were 6,000 acres of apples in production in the Dufur area.
As early as 1900, Spitzenburg apples were freighted to Alaska by steamers from Hood River. The first iced railroad cars came into the Northwest about the same time. Labels were being used by Oregon packers in the late 1890s and at the turn of the century, but, very few of these exist today. Many are forever lost to history. However, about 450 later Oregon apple and pear brands and varieties are listed here.
Among the most famous users of labels in Oregon are the Duckwall Brothers, Apple Growers Association, Harry & David's Bear Creek Orchards, Roy Webster, Stadelman Fruit Company, and the house- packs of many eastern brokers. Among the better known "family- pack" or smaller packing company labels, are those from Modoc Orchards, Southern Oregon Sales and the Naumes Corporation., all three of which are still in business today.
